Top Things to Think About When Trying Out for a Team

Mike Bridge, Madison College Softball Coach

What are the Top Things A Parent Should Think About During a Tryout Period?
Find out what your daughter wants, not your opinion.  Does she want to go out, have fun and practice / workout once a week or does she want to compete at a higher level and maybe play in College?  Determine what that looks like based on her commitment level.

How can a parent know what team is best for their daughter?
You have to do your homework.  Ask these questions: (then work together with your daughter on a choice)
  • Do you want to travel, if so how far (for both practice and games/tournaments?
  • How many times do you want to practice 1X per week or more (in season & off season?)
  • How much can you afford to pay for the team fees? What are other costs involved like hidden fees for uniform, helmet, spikes, hotel and food?
  • What do they offer for player development? Consider the options.

Can you share 3 tips for parents when researching a team?
  1. Call the team before tryouts and ask your questions. If it's not a good fit, why go to tryouts or pay the tryout fee?
  2. Ask about positions and playing time philosophy to level set your expectations going in.
  3. Watch the coach(es) of the team you are considering at the tournaments you are in. You'll determine their demeanor and attitude towards players and the game pretty quickly.

What's Your Current Mantra?
Start with your expectations, then do research and try to find an experience that matches that.
