Words to Say: "Your Mind Will Believe What You Tell It"
Girls can be so hard on themselves when it comes to their ability to play a sport. They think they will hit the ball every time and catch every ball. And, when they don't, they beat themselves up and tell themselves they are no good.
Understanding that our minds tend to make up stories based on how we are feeling, what mood we are in and what we think about our abilities. These stories are often not true, they are made up lies that defeat us and make us feel small.
Here are some tips:
Talk about thinking more hopefully - the idea that something good will happen
When your player is telling herself an untrue story, share your observation and remind her of the facts
Give hugs, love and encourage her to love herself
Offer to practice with her to help her improve her skills
